Mongpu (মংপু /मुन्ग्पू) is a small Himalayan village under Darjeeling district, this can be your next weekend destination. The village day by day gaining popularity as a tourist destination among nature lovers. Mungpoo is famous for its valuable Rabindra Nath Tagore museum (মৈত্রেয়ী দেবীর বাড়ি), memories of Tagore and Cinchona plantation. But Mungpu Valley is also famous for its natural beauty, friendly people, peaceful environments, good food.

          The great literature Tagore fourth times visited the place in his life time, in the year of 1938 he has paid his first visit to Mongpoo and last visit was in the year of 1940.

          In a day trip you can visit Sitong village, which is located just 10 KM away from Mongpoo. Latpanchar and Ahaldara - another ideal place to see the sunrise like Tiger Hill just 15 km away.

How to Reach Mungpoo

Nearest railway station or rail head is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), distance around 52 kilometres through New Jalpaiguri - Sevak-Kalijora - Mongpu. It may take around 2.5 hrs to reach from NJP/Siliguri to Mongpu. Nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB). Daily direct rail & flights connect Mongpu with Kolkata and rest of India. You can rent a small car for 2000 rupees and a big sumo or bolero may cost around 2,500 bucks.

Best Season to Visit Mungpoo

Mongpu can be visited throughout the year except monsoon, but winter and early summer is best season/time to visit Mongpu. In winter you can get a great glimpse of orange orchard in nearby villages like Sitong.
