Chatakpur | Spectacular view of Mount Kanchenjunga

Chatakpur (চটকপুর) is a small village, which falls within Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, located at an altitude of 7,800ft. This is one of the eco-tourism destination nearby Darjeeling. Chatakpur is also famous for bird watching, attracts number of domestic and foreign bird lovers throughout the year. This eco-friendly village offers great mountain views, lush greenery, trekking routes and forest trails.

          The village lies between Mount Kanchenjunga at North and flowing river ‘Relly Khola’ at south, for this reason Chatakpur provides spectacular view of range of Kanchenjunga and evergreen forest. Around 90-100 people are living in this village within around 18-20 village cottages. Organic farming, medicinal herbs, wood cutting and village tourism is main source of income for villagers.

          After 10 minutes of walking from cottage will reach you at Sunrise Watch Tower, from here Sundakphu – the heaven can be seen on a clear day. You also can find number of short trek route from Chatakpur, but trained guide is compulsory for the trek, because the routes goes through dense forest trail. Wild lives like leopards, barking deer and several other animals may be on your trek route. If you are lucky, you can even see a Red Panda also.

All room is double bedded and can accommodate 4 people in room, decent and fully carpeted with comfortable beds. All rooms are with attached western bathroom and geyser installed. 

Food and meals:
Tariff starting Rs.1200/ per person for food (breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the package) and lodging, and all other orders will be chargeable. The homestay has an organic vegetable garden; from there you can pick up garden fresh vegetables and choose what you want to order. The meals will be served in the dining area adjacent to your rooms. You can also utilize the seating’s in the lawn as per your convenience.

How to Reach Chatakpur

Nearest airport is Bagdogra (IXB) and nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP) located about 80 km away through Hill Cart road. Direct car/taxis are available from airport and NJP, car will cost around Rs.2500 – Rs.3500 depending on season and car type. Distance of Chatakpur from mighty Darjeeling around 25 km and 16 km  from Ghoom railway station.

          Shared jeep also available from Siliguri to Ghoom, cost would be around Rs.100 – Rs.150 per head. Then take another car to homestay, or call your host for pick-up (on advance booking).

          If you are coming from Darjeeling, come down to Sonada, and then Chatakpur is only 7kms. it is advisable to hire any big/strong car like Sumo, Bolero, Jeep etc, due to few kilometers of road in bad condition only boulder.

Best Season to Visit Chatakpur

Chatakpur is a destination which can be visited throughout the year, except monsoon. Every year homestay and village cottages remain closed from July to mid of September.
